Step into a world of tiny giants and hidden wonders. The Bug Barn is home to over 40 species of exotic and native invertebrates, making it one of the largest and most diverse displays of its kind in Central England. From shimmering beetles and camouflaged leaf insects to colourful frogs and giant spiders, this immersive indoor space reveals the incredible world of the creatures that keep our ecosystems alive.
Join our Resident Explorer, Paul Carpenter, who has travelled through the Amazon rainforests, Africa, and Southeast Asia, studying and even discovering new species of spiders along the way.
Our collection includes some of the planet’s most fascinating species; from the mighty Goliath Tarantula and delicate Madagascar Orb-Weaving Spiders to Leaf Insects that vanish into their surroundings, and even Poison Dart Frogs like the striking Golden Poison Dart Frog, known as the world’s most toxic land animal.
Through interactive exhibits and expert insight, visitors can experience these species up close while learning about their habitats, behaviours, and the crucial roles they play in nature.
At Attwell Farm Park, we believe that understanding begins with curiosity. The Bug Barn is designed to educate and inspire, helping visitors of all ages appreciate the importance of invertebrates in sustaining ecosystems.
Our displays align with national curriculum topics in Science, Geography, and Environmental Studies, making the Bug Barn an invaluable resource for school visits and group learning. Teachers can easily integrate our exhibits into lessons on biodiversity, adaptation, and conservation, offering a truly hands-on way to reinforce classroom learning.
Each enclosure is carefully designed to recreate the natural environment of its inhabitants, allowing students and families to observe, question, and connect with the natural world in a memorable and meaningful way.
Visitors can engage with a range of interactive learning opportunities throughout the Bug Barn. Observe the behaviour of the Goliath Tarantula, discover how orb-weaving spiders build intricate webs, or learn how leaf insects camouflage perfectly among rainforest plants.
Our team is always on hand to share insights and answer questions, helping guests of all ages develop a deeper understanding of how invertebrates influence biodiversity, pollination, and the global food chain.
Beyond education, the Bug Barn is committed to conservation and species protection. We actively support breeding and research programmes for invertebrates listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, contributing to the preservation of vulnerable species for future generations.
These conservation efforts highlight our dedication to environmental sustainability, while offering visitors a chance to see how responsible breeding and habitat awareness make a real difference in protecting delicate ecosystems.
The Bug Barn plays a key role in inspiring young minds, from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3 and beyond. By combining exploration, science, and storytelling, we aim to spark curiosity and respect for even the smallest creatures that share our planet.
Whether you’re a family looking for a unique day out, a teacher planning an interactive school trip, or simply a curious visitor, the Bug Barn promises an educational and unforgettable experience that brings the miniature world of invertebrates to life.
